SITUATION
The world heritage site zeche zollverein is an attraction spot for creatives and design masterminds. the RUHR CITY LAB  is going to be a centre for discussion, representation, documentation and simulation of architecture and urbanism  in the european capital of culture RUHR 2010.

RUHR DISTRICT/ FLEXIBILITY
right from the beginning of the design process of the RUHR CITY LAB, i was interested in how to deal with the prevailing topic of the ruhr district, the restructuring, and how to integrate these insights into the building structure.

the RUHR CITY LAB should be more than just a museum for urbanism and architecture. For me, this typology is an active and communicative field for experimentation, exploration and development of new ideas and strategies in urbanism and architecture. In regard to the task and program, it was important to create a network/ field of flexible and open spaces, which are strongly linked to each other.

ZECHE ZOLLVEREIN/ ACTIVATION
At the intersection of kokerei, design school (sanaa) and kohlenwäsche (oma/koolhaas) a new element of the attraction path zeche zollverein emerges, the RUHR CITY LAB. The building volume integrates itself into the strict orthogonality of the context.  Between arendahls wiese and the former coal digger, a new stripe of interaction, a kind of a market square, is going to be generated.

BUILDING CONCEPT/ LAYERING
the RUHR CITY LAB is divided into 3 layers, the underground layer is the carved-out archive
space (the catacombs). above it is the so-called market square, the exhibition area. the open plan allows a wide range of uses, such as open air festivals, fairs and exhibitions. The top layer, the shiny box, is the experimentation layer. The introverted box deals with the development and analysis of the ruhr urbanism.

the 3 layers are connected by the ruhr model, a 24*14m big changeable model, it is the center of the whole building.during exhibitions it sits in the dell of the entrance layer.. for experimentation, it can be moved up into the 3rd layer.

FACADE
the facade is a shiny aluminized glass layer, which takes on the geometry of the surrounding, while blurring it with its mirror effect.
